Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s Animal Care Leadership Team is announcing the opening of a full-time Primate Lead Keeper in the Animal Care Department.

We are seeking qualified applicants for a Primate Lead Keeper in the Animal Care Department. The Lead Keeper performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects Utah’s Hogle Zoo mission. The Lead Keeper will be responsible for training, supervising and monitoring area keepers in addition to performing husbandry within primate areas. The selected candidate will be responsible for coordinating activities within the Animal Care Department and may participate in conservation and welfare programs.

The selected candidate will be involved with leading, mentoring and coaching staff and be responsible for maintaining the highest standards of animal care in conjunction with the area curator. Oversite will include but not be limited to animal introductions, veterinary procedures, behavioral husbandry, and research. In addition, the successful candidates will represent the Zoo as requested for interpretive programming.

Education and Pre-requisites

Applicants must be able to work effectively with coworkers, other departments, guests, and volunteers. Excellent verbal and written communication skills will be necessary in the successful pursuit of this position. Degree in life sciences, biology, zoology or related field is preferred. A minimum of five years of paid zoo keeping experience is preferred with preference given to those who have leadership experience.

Applicants must be able to work in diverse and variable weather conditions, in close proximity to guests and be able to lift over 50 pounds or 75 pounds with assistance safely. Requires the ability bend, stoop, jump and generally move quickly to avoid dangerous situations.
