Description
Flying Colors Aviary is a large private aviary located on Whidbey Island, WA
We have a caretaker opening! Looking for a responsible, self-starting, thoughtful employee to help care for our large aviary of mostly parrots.
The primary job function will be to provide for the safety and well-being of our birds. You will be working with other parrot caretakers with whom close communication is required. Our daily care routine includes raking up droppings; scrubbing, repairing, and replacing perches; feeding, light food prep and medicating; cleaning of kitchen, bathroom, and office in addition to interacting with the parrots. We maintain a safe and clean aviary for us and the birds.
We would like to hire someone with most or all of these qualities:
Previous animal caretaking, especially with parrots or other non-raptor birds
Detail-oriented, ability to work independently and follow through on daily tasks.
Cleaning and organizational skills.
Clear communication between caretakers, including emails at shift changes. Ability to read, write and retain the info in daily email reports.
Ability to meet physical demands of the job. The flooring varies from uneven gravel, sand, grassy field and a gradual slope plus about 5 stair steps, and you must be able to move quickly over it to check on commotions that may arise. Must be able to be on your feet for several hours at a time, keeping up a quick pace walking between aviaries as you complete tasks. Must be able to lift 40-50 lb. sacks of feed and carry them into storage and then carry them out when needed.
Be able to adapt and respond to sudden changes and guidance by management as we frequently adjust to changing needs of the birds.
Must be legally authorized to work in the US. Compensation starts at $17.50/hr paid every two weeks. Raises available as competency increases.
A great attitude! Ability to multi-task and remain calm in the face of bird chaos.
Job Types: Full-time and Part-time
There are two shifts daily to choose from: the first runs 8 am to 1 pm, the second runs 1pm to dark. These times will adjust as the daylight shortens, but the shift length remains about 5-6 hours.
You must be able to commute reliably to Langley, WA. For the right candidate, onsite housing can be discussed.
