Description
Provides security for the animals as well as for zoo facilities and grounds by checking door locks, making routine rounds throughout the zoo and responding to emergency situations.
Monitors facilities for safety issues and possible hazards and reports to supervisor any items of concern. Assists in making maintenance, safety or hazard repairs to zoo facilities. In addition, this position encompasses special projects and light construction.
Maintains inventory of supplies, tools and equipment and advises supervisor as to the needs of public areas and visitor amenities.
Completes required paperwork including daily reports, maintenance work orders and supply requests.
Prepare diets and foods for a variety of classes of zoological specimens including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians according to established policies and procedures in accordance with industry guidelines.
Periodically performs scheduled checks on animals and report findings to animal care staff. Performs other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Education and Pre-requisites
Applicants must be able to work effectively as an individual, and in a strong team environment; foster positive interactions with guests and other Zoo departments, and possess a strong commitment to wildlife conservation, animal welfare, and providing a high-quality guest experience.
The successful candidate must be willing to be ERT trained. Excellent writing and public speaking skills are necessary. Variable night shift will be based on the Zoo’s needs. Experience with a wide variety of taxa in a zoo setting is preferred. A degree in life sciences, biology, zoology or related field is preferred.
Previous experience and skill with hand tools, power tools, and light construction is also preferred.
Applicant must be able to work under diverse and variable weather conditions and be able to lift over 50 pounds without injury, bend, stoop, jump, stretch. Good driving record required.
Compensation and benefits
This is a full time position that includes paid vacation,holiday time, and sick leave. Salary is commensurate with experience.
