The Nashville Zoo is seeking an experienced Curator of Mammals to join our team. With four new exhibits opening soon (Spider Monkey, Sumatran Tiger, Andean Bear and White Rhino), a new 24,000 square foot state of the art Veterinary Hospital opening in 2018 along with a 40 Acre Africa exhibit, the timing of this rare opportunity is perfect for the ideal candidate.

Description: The Curator of Mammals is responsible for all aspects of management of the mammal department at Nashville Zoo. Reporting directly to the Director of Animal Collections, the Curator of Mammals assists with animal acquisition, husbandry programs, daily exhibit maintenance, development & oversight of Keeper routines, animal enrichment, exhibit design, budget management and staff selection/training/development. This position is part of the Animal Management Team and works closely with multiple departments within the Zoo.

Duties and responsibilities including but not limited to:
• Develops animal management protocols and is directly responsible for the management of the growing mammal collection.
• Ensures compliance with all Nashville Zoo, USDA, AZA and TWRA policies.
• Assists in developing department annual budget and operates within budget parameters. Takes corrective action when necessary to ensure budgets are not exceeded.
• Interacts with other zoological institutions and conservation organizations regarding the progressive care, husbandry, and conservation of the species under the Curator’s care.
• Participates in scientific meetings, conferences, and workshops pertaining to the species under the charge of the curator. Authors papers and presents lectures on husbandry and conservation issues. Stays current on conservation and care developments of species under care.
• Manages department, working closely with Leads and Supervisors. Identifies opportunities for staff growth and development, and assists staff to take advantage of these opportunities.
• Ensures consistent compliance with Zoo policies.
• Participation in development of new exhibits, improvement of existing exhibits and husbandry and enrichment programs.
• Represents the Nashville Zoo before other zoos, conservation societies, professional and educational organizations, the media, and federal and state agencies to present the Zoo’s position on animal management and conservation issues in a well-informed, positive and responsive manner

Education and Pre-requisites

• Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, Biology, or a related field
• Minimum seven or more years’ experience and ongoing training in the collection, care and conservation of exotic animals required
• Extensive experience with carnivores required, experience with primates preferred
• Minimum five years’ experience in a management capacity
