Description

Virginia Safari Park, a 180-acre drive through zoo and breeding center, is expanding and searching for additional staff. We maintain an inventory of 1000+ specimens comprised of large groups of hoofed stock as well as our “Safari Village”; a 10-acre section comprised of primates, carnivores, various birds species including penguins, a walk-through aviary, reptiles and petting area.

For this lead position we are looking for a person with strong prior experience with African Penguins and animal husbandry. Must be able to manage, train and motivate animal care staff, assist with setting up, and overseeing breeding programs. This is a hands-on position and will require extensive time spent in the field observing both the staff and animal collection daily. Experience can be substituted for a degree.

Education and Pre-requisites

• This position requires extensive exotic animal knowledge and experience, including experience working with african penguins and big cats.
• A BS in Animal Science/Biology preferred
• A strong work ethic, good physical condition and a willingness to learn
• Must be able to adhere to our strict personal appearance requirements, no visible tattoos permitted.
• Maintain a non-smoking work environment
• Have the ability to work in all weather conditions
• Experience in using or willing to learn to use trucks, tractors, weed eaters, and other types of machinery
• Minimum of 2 years paid animal care,
• Precise record-keeping, collection management experience
• Knowledge of proper animal conformation & body conditions, gestation periods, nutrition and forages a plus.
• Valid Driver’s license
• Must be able to work weekends and holidays
• Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs
