Description
The Wild Animal Sanctuary – Texas (TWAS-Texas) is an accredited Sanctuary for Lions, Tigers, Bears, Wolves and other exotic animals that have been rescued from illegal or abusive situations. We are the first Sanctuary of its kind to be certified by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and have become one of the country’s leading facilities for internships working with exotic animals. Formerly known as the International Exotic Animal Sanctuary, the organization became part of the TWAS network as of May 22nd, 2020.
Experience includes learning proper safety procedures for large carnivores, diet preparation, feeding, cleaning, animal health, animal management, behavioral observations, enrichment, and record keeping for exotics. Interns will assist with construction and habitat modification and related activties. Interns will also be involved with the volunteer program, and both formal and informal presentations. Classes led by certified instructors for CPR, Basic First Aid and Bleeding Control will be provided. (class may be cancelled due to COVID) **This is a strict no contact position**
Education and Pre-requisites
Canididates should have either three years of animal related experience or at least two years of undergraduate program studies in zoology, animal management, biology, or a related field. International applications are welcome. Interns must be able to perform regular, strenuous duties in over 100 degree weather and must be able to lift 50 lbs. You must present yourself in a professional manner.
Compensation and benefits
This is an unpaid internship. Housing and local vehicle access/use are provided.
