Description

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum located near Tucson, Arizona is accepting applications for a Full-time Keeper to join the Raptor Free Flight (RFF) team. The RFF program comprises a variety of onsite and offsite education programs with flight trained birds (raptors, corvids and other taxa) native to the Sonoran Desert region. Interpretations are science and conservation centered and highlights the inherent ability of birds in nature to entertain and educate.
The successful candidate will have strong knowledge and experience in free-flying birds of prey and husbandry specific to flight-trained raptors. The RFF Keeper plays an active role in presenting two free flight demonstrations per day, showcasing a variety of raptors native to Arizona and the Sonoran Desert as well as other raptor-focused education presentations. Knowledge of the Sonoran Desert region is beneficial. This position assists with training and certification of volunteers.

Education and Pre-requisites

Must be able to work weekends and holidays. Must be a quick learner, have an eye for detail, and able to work independently with little supervision. Must be team-oriented and have a courteous, sensitive, and respectful demeanor when working with volunteers and interfacing with the public. Must be able to work long hours in the extreme temperatures typical of the Sonoran Desert. Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school and at least two years’ work experience (preferably paid) in an AZA-accredited facility; or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Must have a minimum of one (1) year experience working with free-flight birds either in a show setting, bird abatement, or falconry. Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.

Compensation and benefits

Initial Step: $15.16/hr. for the first year. This is a Regular status position.
