Job Title: Keeper II
Department: Mammals
Reports to: Curator of Mammals
FLSA Status: Exempt
Job Status: Full-Time

Job Purpose: The Keeper II is responsible for animal husbandry and maintenance of exhibit, holding and public areas of the assigned department – Pandas. This person will report to the area Lead Keeper or Assistant Curator or Curator as appropriate.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

All duties pertaining to a Keeper I
Work effectively in a team environment
Actively support and implement area policies, procedures and protocols to ensure the highest standards of care for the collection and the safety of staff and visitors
Exhibit a high level of performance of general keeper duties including animal care and observations, facility maintenance and visitor service
Participate in and support collaborative efforts pertaining to the care of the collection including training, enrichment, research and education
Monitor health and behavior of animal collection and communicate changes to supervisors and vet staff. Oversee administration of medications as applicable
Understand and support Zoo Atlanta’s Strategic and Master Plans and departmental Collection Plans
Assist in coordinating and implementing veterinary, departmental, marketing, education, maintenance, horticulture and external department initiatives)
Participate in daily husbandry, exhibit maintenance and visitor service
Actively participate in workshops, seminars, activities and conferences aimed at improving job knowledge (subject to Zoo Atlanta’s financial situation where relevant)
Actively foster constructive attitudes and a team orientation among staff
Maintain the highest level of safety in the work area through implementation of safety protocols and procedures
Cross-train in at least one other animal department
Maintain a high performance level of general keeper duties including excellent animal care and visitor interactions including scheduled on-ground talks to guests
Participate in one or more of the following: AAZK, enrichment or training committee, area research projects, education or conservation programs
Coordinate and supervise activities of interns and volunteers as required
Other duties as assigned

Any other miscellaneous projects/assignment assigned by Zoo Atlanta’s Animal Management team

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge:

Familiarity with and ability to apply operant conditioning techniques (as required)
Minimum of 3 years animal care experience in a zoological setting
Special skills and abilities:
Willingness to work holidays, weekends and flexible work schedules
Zoo Atlanta is open to the public 363 days out of the year, therefore, all positions at Zoo Atlanta may require employees to work some weekends, holidays and evenings
Education: Four year degree in biology, psychology, zoology or related field. Sufficient relevant experience will be considered in partial fulfillment of education requirement.

Driving Requirements: Must obtain a valid GA driver’s license within 30 days of hire. (All employees that drive a Zoo vehicle/cart/operate a Ride (train, carousel, etc) must consent to a MVR verification that is acceptable per Zoo Atlanta’s auto liability insurance carrier’s guidelines to perform this function).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Applicants must be able to pass a physical examination; lift 50 pounds repeatedly

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Must be able to work in inclement and variable weather conditions
