Education and Pre-requisites

Essential job functions for this position include the day-to-day management of animals, feeding and providing for the general care and welfare of assigned exhibit animals, cleaning exhibit enclosures and contiguous areas, providing exhibit security and performing related work as required. Carnivore and/or hoofstock experience is required. An example would be at least 6 months of experience working with carnivores and/or hoofstock. Qualifications include: animal husbandry knowledge, an understanding of mammal management, direct experience working with animals in a zoological setting, a basic understanding of positive reinforcement operant conditioning and animal behavior, care, feeding and handling of exotic animals. Safety practices around wild animals and guest interactions/public presentations are necessary. Frequent requirements to move moderate to heavy objects and work on uneven terrain with exposure to varying weather conditions, dust and allergens are components of the position. Selected candidate will also be required to move about on slippery surfaces, handle toxic and/or hazardous materials and possible exposure to zoonotic diseases. May work from elevated positions and/or in confined or cramped spaces. The qualified candidate is expected to be a team player and have good communication skills. A degree or equivalent experience in biology or a scientifically related field from a recognized institution and/or experience working in an accredited zoological facility is a highly desired. Interested applicants must be available to work any of the seven days of the week and be available evenings and/or daytime hours. This is a part-time and on-call position. Scheduled work hours will vary between 16 to 24 hours an average. There may be some weeks without any scheduled work hours. Over 24 hours may be scheduled as operational needs indicate. A good driving record and a valid driver license is required. California drivers license is required. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to apply.

Compensation and benefits

3 Union positions without benefits. Hourly payrate: $21.24.
