The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
Kangaroo Krossing Attendant is an entry-level position into animal care. You will maintain a safe environment for both the animals and the guests and perform various tasks related to the handling and care of animals and their habitats. You will also provide educational information to the public through structured, professional presentations and informal conversations.

As a Kangaroo Krossing Attendant, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:

Approach each guest with an authentic greeting within 60 seconds upon eye contact within Kangaroo Krossing.
Assist with the overall development of Kangaroo Krossing activities and topics.
Assist in treating zoo animals following instructions of a manager or zoo veterinarian.
Observe, evaluate, and report animal behavior and condition of animals to the manager.
Perform routine and special duties involved in the daily care and maintenance of animals in Kangaroo Krossing.
Exchange information with the management staff and coworkers regularly.
Clean and maintain animal enclosures, service areas, and holding facilities daily using a rake, shovel, wheelbarrow, and other tools as required.
Maintain a safe environment for both animals and guests.
For the safety of our internal and external guests, you must secure animals, their enclosures, and other associated structures.
Assist in the maintenance of animal enclosures.
Assist with animal transfers.
Provide educational information to the public throughout the day in a professional manner.
Consistently exhibit an attitude of service inside and outside the zoo, showing hospitality to all.

Education and Pre-requisites

Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:

For the safety of our animals, zoo crew, and guests, you must be able to work safely around delicate, wild, and dangerous animals.
Strong desire to work with the public
Ability to work comfortably among a wide variety of people
Ability to communicate effectively in English, presenting biological, historical, and conservation information in a professional and engaging manner
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to remain calm under pressure
Able to receive and follow instructions and communicate with co-workers.
Must establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees.
Effective written and verbal communication skills
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred
Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment National Sex Offender Search, Criminal Background Check, and Drug Screen
We enjoy year-round operation for all staff and must be available day, nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional special after-hour assignments.
