Description

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center has an opening for the Hoofstock/Rhino Curator. The successful candidate will be responsible for the oversight of care and management of the hoofstock and rhino collection. This position is responsible for providing a healthy, well-managed hoofstock collection on a daily basis, supporting a conservation mission, enhancement of visitor experience and learning opportunities through the hoofstock/rhino collection responsibilities, providing professional training opportunities through staff and internship supervision, and providing supervision and oversight of Animal Care staff in the hoofstock department. The successful candidate will also be responsible for providing animal care, monitoring animal health, accurate record keeping, reporting, cleaning, assessing nutritional/management needs within a pasture/range ungulate management system, animal area maintenance, and visitor interaction. As a ‘working/manager’, this position will require office time as well as time in the center participating in animal care daily routines.

Education and Pre-requisites

Qualifications include experience with hoofstock/rhino management (semi-free ranging preferable), animal restraint, record keeping, some maintenance, possess a valid driver’s license, and public speaking. The position will work with eight white rhinos and four black rhinos currently housed at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and be responsible for the oversight of staff caring for (and some daily routines of) twenty other species of hooved mammals on large acreage tracts (20-400 acres). This position can be physically demanding requiring heavy lifting (up to 75 pounds), and adverse weather conditions are common. The candidate must be a team player as well as able to work alone. A University Degree in Biology, Zoology, or related field, or 5 years of experience, and two years in a supervisory position at a related facility is preferred. Work schedule will be five days a week including weekends and holidays as needed. The position is full time exempt.
