Description

The Gulf Breeze Zoo, a 50-acre facility located in the beautiful Florida panhandle, is searching for a Hoofstock keeper. The Zoo maintains a collection of over 900 animals including great apes, carnivores, primates, birds, reptiles and a large petting area.

The Gulf Breeze Zoo is seeking an energetic and hardworking individual who shares a passion for hoofstock. The Zoo currently has 3 unique hoofstock positions with the opportunity to care for animals in both a free-range preserve and exhibit setting; including (but not limited to): giraffes, white rhinos, addax, dromedary camel, sable, oryx, wildebeest, llamas, red lechwe, Thomson’s gazelle, blackbuck, and ratites.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to providing proper animal care through:
• Daily cleaning and maintenance of exhibits.
• Diet preparation and feeding.
• Assist in vet and medical procedures.
• Daily observation of animals including for injuries, breeding, and general healthcare.
• Administer proper enrichment to various animal species.
• Help with capture, moving, and handling of large hoofstock according to set policies and procedures.
• Use small machinery, power tools, and lawn equipment in a safe manner.
• Must be able to communicate and give keeper talks to guests through formal and informal encounters.

Education and Pre-requisites

A bachelor’s degree in an animal relevant field is strongly desired. Previous experience with exotic animals feeding, care, and exhibit cleaning/maintenance is beneficial and may be substituted for a 4 year degree for qualified applicants. Experience with large domestic hoofed stock (cattle, sheep, horses, etc.) is also applicable. Veterinary technician certification is a plus.

All applicants must be physically fit with the ability to lift 50 pounds comfortably and be able to work in all types of weather. Applicants must possess a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and excellent communication skills. Ability to follow a strict personal dress code and maintain a valid driver’s license is required. Note: Gulf Breeze Zoo is a drug free and smoke free work environment.
