Description

Audubon Zoo is currently seeking enthusiastic candidates for its herpetological husbandry internship program.

Internship Overview:

This internship program is geared towards individuals interested in pursuing a career in zoo herpetology and will provide valuable opportunities to gain experience working with a diverse collection of more than 100 species of reptiles and amphibians in an AZA accredited institution. Excluding venomous taxa, the Herpetological Husbandry Intern will participate in all aspects of the day to day husbandry of the zoo’s reptile and amphibian collection and assist the herpetology department with daily routines and various other tasks. These will include, but are not limited to diet preparation and feeding, cleaning, exhibit maintenance, maintaining live feeder invertebrate colonies, data collection and record keeping, and monitoring health and behavior. Additional assistance with planned research projects may also be possible, and all interns are expected to complete an independent project of their own during the program.

The next internship position is slated to begin in September 2018. Although flexible, this program requires a minimum commitment of two days per week (totaling a minimum of 16 hours per week). This is an unpaid internship.

Qualifications:

Current enrollment in, or recent graduation from, a college or university biology program (or related field)
Prior experience working with captive reptiles and amphibians and familiarity with their biology
Ability to lift 50 pounds and work outdoors in all weather conditions
Ability to work individually and as a team and follow directions from others
Valid driver’s license with dependable transportation
