Description

The Center for Great Apes is a fully accredited great ape sanctuary in Florida for orangutans and chimpanzees who have been retired or rescued from the entertainment industry or the exotic pet trade. The sanctuary has recently expanded with a number of new orangutan and chimpanzee arrivals and is hiring caregivers now. The Center is seeking experienced caregivers in great ape husbandry who will provide all aspects of caregiving including training behaviors for health checks and social introductions. The focus of this position is to provide optimal care for the health and welfare of the 64 sanctuary orangutans and chimpanzees.

Education and Pre-requisites

• 2 years’ experience in animal husbandry or equivalent primate husbandry internships. (2+ years of great ape husbandry preferred)
• Two or more years of college in a related subject.
• Have a philosophy of animal care and animal respect that blends with the Center’s mission.
• Be able to lift 50 pounds and carry for a short distance
• Be able to work outdoors in inclement weather including rain, heat, and humidity
• Be available to work any day of the week including weekends and holidays
• Realize that all staff are part of a team whose goal is to provide the best possible care for the resident apes by supporting each staff member of the team in helping with chores and sharing duties
• Proof of COVID19 vaccination, negative TB test, annual flu shot
