Responsibilities and Duties

Overview

The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to work with the zoo’s new herd of giraffes. This candidate will be knowledgeable in giraffe care pertaining to feeding, training, safe exhibition, and husbandry. This position will require management skills to oversee other staff members. The successful candidate will be comfortable with public speaking and presenting in front of large groups.

Principal Duties:

* Responsible for the daily husbandry, welfare, training, and reproduction management for giraffes
* Observes and monitors the health of the animals in the area
* Act as a primary manager of other keepers
* Ensures the safety of the animals, staff, and public
* Responsible for creating, maintaining, and recording enrichment programs
* Responsible for the creation of a positive reinforcement program using operant conditioning
* Experience using a Tamer or GRD to facilitate restraint and training of the animals is preferred
* Clean and disinfect exhibit and holding areas
* Experience pertaining to public feeding of giraffes is a plus
* Facilitates and participates in training for medical procedures, in conjunction with veterinary staff

Necessary Skills:

* Ability to interact with the public in an engaging and welcoming manner
* Ability to work as an effective team member as well as function independently|
* Strong communication skills
* Comfortable giving public demonstrations and tours
* Positive Attitude
* Ability to lift 50 lbs.
* Ability to work weekends and holidays, as needed

Education and Pre-requisites

Minimum Requirements

* Minimum two years working with giraffe, preferably with supervisory experience
* Bachelors of Science in Animal Science or related field or compensatory work experience
