Description
Tiger World Endangered Wildlife Preserve is recruiting for our General Manager –Animal Care position. This position will lead a progressive animal care team for our large carnivore collection and a variety of primates, birds, and reptiles.
We are looking for a dedicated, passionate and fast learning individual with a minimum of 3 years past experience caring for animals and managing people. We need an independent thinker with leadership skills to manage the Animal Care Team and various business aspects of the park. With a large geriatric population coming from our rescue program we prefer candidates with a history of veterinary participation and a strong ability to read subtle animal behaviors. Qualifications include a working knowledge of current animal husbandry techniques; experience and knowledgeable in operant conditioning & training; excellent supervisory, communication and conflict resolution skills. These attributes along with others described below are extremely important for filling this position. Tiger World is looking for a long-term employee. 1) Job Description
Job duties include but are not limited to;
• Daily inspections of animals and proper documentation of observations; Ex. of observations- new injuries, update on existing prognoses, maintenance in exhibit, animal body weight mass, food consumption, etc.
• Manage all scheduling of staff, animal care, and events
• Administration of medications, vaccines, or other health related items
• Communication with section leaders to follow up on animal care progress
• Daily communication with Directors for overall zoo and animal welfare
• Use behavioral knowledge to properly assess animal heat cycles and pregnancies; aid in caring for infants as needed
• Assist Directors with facilitating the shipping and acquisition of animals, and creating/implementing new policies and procedures as needed
• Assist and participate with Veterinary Procedures
• Operant conditioning training for regular husbandry and veterinary care
• Handling of animals, crating animals for transport and participation with Emergency Response Team
• Learn all Sections and fill in on regular keeper vacation/sick and days off
• Participate with managing the Animal Care staff
• Motivates & coaches staff and leads by example
• Food preparation and supplement administration including butchering and processing of meat, cleaning food prep areas
• Cleaning of exhibits and implementation of enrichment
• Participation in educational tours, keeper talks and off site animal programs
• General Zoo Maintenance in and around exhibits (landscaping, painting, exhibit upgrades, etc.)
• Assist with building and construction throughout zoo
Education and Pre-requisites
• Must have a BS degree in Biology/Zoology or related field; or equivalent combination of education, experience and training
• MINIMUM 3 Years full-time experience in a zoological institution with 1 Year management experience
• Work in a harmonious manner with staff, volunteers and supervisors
• Must be honest, trustworthy and very organized
• Independent worker who also follows instructions, as well as adhering to required established policies and procedures
• Positive attitude and strong work ethic, arriving to work on time and willing to work late if necessary
• Must be able to work in unfavorable weather conditions including rain, snow, extreme heat and freezing temperatures
• Ability to do some heavy lifting of at least 50 pounds is required
• Must have valid driver’s license and social security card or Work Visa
• Up to date vaccinations including Tetanus and TB negative
Compensation and benefits
Annual Starting Salary Range $40,000-$45,000 (dependent on combination of education and experience). Vacation/Sick Time is accumulated at 1 day per month of employment. Monthly health care stipend available of $100. On-Site living opportunity may be available for the right candidate.
