Bring your proven animal care leadership experience to the Oregon Zoo, where you will play an integral role in leading our exceptional animal care team.

In this role, you will lead a progressive team of animal care professionals, maximizing opportunities for animals to thrive, both at the Oregon Zoo and in the wild. The General Curator (GC) is responsible for leading collaborative collection planning; overseeing exhibit design and modification; directing, supervising, training and evaluating the work of the Curators; ensuring appropriate development, training and evaluation of animal care staff; and integrating animal care efforts to meet the mission of the zoo. It is expected that the GC will not only remain current with Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) best practices, but raise the bar for the zoo community overall.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in animal husbandry and exotic animal care; experience supervising animal care staff at an AZA-accredited facility; and proven success with endangered species management, including husbandry, animal welfare, enrichment program development, training program development, and documentation.

This position exercises independent judgment within established guidelines and policies, with direction from the Deputy Director of Care, Connection & Conservation.

Education and Pre-requisites

• Bachelor’s degree in animal science, biology, zoology or related field; AND
• Five years of experience leading or supervising staff; AND
• At least two years of project management experience in animal husbandry and exotic animal care; OR
• Any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.

This position requires a valid driving license with at least two years of driving history and a clean driving record.

Medical testing and/or immunizations may be required as the duties of this position may require close contact with animal areas and enclosures where animals may be present.

Preferred qualifications:
• Master’s degree in biology, anthropology, zoology, animal science or related field.
• At least five years in a supervisory position at an AZA-accredited facility
• Extensive experience in animal husbandry and exotic animal care
• Experience with endangered species management, conservation and research practices, including husbandry, animal welfare, enrichment, training and documentation.

Compensation and benefits

Salary: $99,947 – $141,968 annually
