The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”). The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs a variety of non-skilled and semi-skilled grounds maintenance duties. Also performs related work as required by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Performs general laborer tasks, including digging, hauling, cleaning up.
2. Participates in general gardening, including planting, pruning, watering, and fertilizing plants, shrubs, hedges, and trees; weeds flower beds and containers; re-sods and/or repairs lawns; mows and trims lawns and hedges with hand and power driven equipment.
3. Operates mowers, rototillers, edgers, string trimmers, chain saws, and various other types of grounds maintenance equipment.
4. Under supervision, participates in the use of the brush chipper.
5. Participates in collection of browse materials on and off site.
6. Performs simple and minor repairs to irrigation systems such as replacing broken risers and heads, cleaning nozzles and filters and repairing or extending drip tubing or emitters.
7. Performs simple maintenance on tools and equipment such as sharpening blades and changing oil and filters.
8. Interacts with Zoo guests courteously and offers proper attention at all times.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum six months paid experience in basic gardening. Basic knowledge of plants, trees, shrubs, insects, and disease. General knowledge of maintenance and irrigation procedures. Basic ability to operate various grounds maintenance equipment. Able to follow oral and written directions, good communication skills.

LICENSES: Requires valid Class C driver’s license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 lbs and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can be loud.

Salary Range: $16.99– $20.00/hour (1/1/22)
