Description
Day-to-day husbandry including: feeding and cleaning.
Cross-training all areas of zoo.
Daily observation and reporting.
Behavioral enrichment for animal collection.
Interaction with zoo visitors.
Routine animal handling.
Routine animal health care.
General Ground’s maintenance.
Basic exhibit repairs and maintenance.
REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to follow written and oral directions, exercise sound independent judgments, and apply safety protocol applicable to the work. Must have the ability to maintain good working relationships with interns, seasonal staff, volunteers, and full-time keeper staff, supervisors, and directors. Must have the ability to work hard as a productive member of a team possess excellent time management skills and be detail-oriented. Incumbent must demonstrate the ability to develop proficiency in performing assigned duties, and specialized procedures as directed. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hour assignments.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Will also be subjected to strong odor, hay, and animal hair/fur/dander. Must have good physical strength and endurance. Must be able to climb ladders/stairs, lift and carry crates/animals/feed-weighing 50-100 lbs. Must be agile and flexible to maneuver in and around animals within exhibits, corrals, and holding areas.
Education and Pre-requisites
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: B.S. degree in captive wildlife management, conservation biology, zoology, animal science or equivalent experience farm hand, animal care facility or zoo.
