Description

Under the direction of the Animal Care Supervisor, the animal keeper is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations associated with the husbandry of the animals and the maintenance of animal exhibits.
KEY DUTIES INCLUDE:
Carrying out all aspects of the daily care of assigned animals, including cleaning, feeding, and exhibit maintenance, as well as general upkeep of support facilities.
Maintaining clean and organized exhibits, service areas, and equipment.
Preparing and feeding appropriate diets as per established feeding practices and diet sheets.
Administering prescribed medications, supplements, or treatments under the guidance of the Animal Care Supervisor and Veterinary Services Supervisor.
Recording and reporting any abnormal animal health or behavioral issues to the Animal Care Supervisor and in relevant logs.
Maintaining daily reports, logs, and records as appropriate and according to established guidelines
Understanding and applying a practical understanding of operant conditioning as it relates to the daily management of species under his/her care.
As appropriate, eliminating weeds and toxic plants from animal enclosures.
In conjunction with the Center’s Vermin Control Team, may assist in pest control.
Identifying potential maintenance or safety issues and reporting them to the Animal Care Supervisor.
Being on call in the event of inclement weather or other animal-related emergency.
Participating in keeper chats, tours, animal presentations or demonstrations, and/or other public interactions as requested by the Animal Care Supervisor.
May oversee work activities and/or provide training for interns, seasonal workers, or volunteers.
Working weekends and/or holidays

Education and Pre-requisites

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma, or equivalent.
Experience working with exotic mammals.
Strong interpersonal, team-building, and communication skills.
Basic skills with Microsoft Office and Excel software applications.
Licensed to operate a motor vehicle in North Carolina, or the ability to obtain a license.
Ability to lift at least 50lbs.

PREFFERED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Two-year or four-year degree in one of the natural sciences or a closely related discipline.
3 years of experience working with exotic mammals, with at least 1 of these years being in an employee capacity.
Construction and maintenance experience, especially in carpentry and fencing.
1 year of experience working in the capacity of a vet tech with either domestic or exotic animals.

Compensation and benefits

The salary for this position is commensurate with experience. Shared housing opportunities may be available.
