Description
The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”). The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 C’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it. The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (“AZA”). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.
SUMMARY: The candidate in this position will support the mission of the San Francisco Zoo by inspiring our youngest guests to connect, care and conserve through the popular Fall/Winter Zoo Camp program. Zoo Camp is a daytime program that serves children ages 5-12. The primary responsibility of the Zoo Camp After-Care Assistant is to provide a fun and safe experience for Zoo Camp participants enrolled in evening extended care. An ideal candidate is creative, enthusiastic, independent and has a strong interest in working with children.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Supervises Zoo Camp extended care participants.
• Prepares and organizes materials needed for the program.
• Facilitates educational games and activities for a variety of age groups.
• Works effectively as a member of a diverse team.
• Ensures an efficient and safe camper pick-up process.
• Assists with communication between daytime camp staff and caregivers at pick-up.
• Provides excellent customer service during interactions with Zoo Camp families.
• Maintains a clean and organized After-Care area.
• Communicates caregiver concerns to the Zoo Camp management in a timely fashion.
• Demonstrates a commitment to the mission and core values of the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens as outlined in the employee handbook.
• Ensures the safety of campers, staff and guests at all times.
• Other duties, as assigned.

COMMITMENT
• Ability to work part-time (2:30pm-5:30pm), for the entire Fall/Winter zoo camp season. Fall Zoo Camp will run from November 20 through November 22, 2023. Winter Zoo Camp will run December 26 through December 29, 2023 & January 2 through January 5, 2024. Training will take place Training is on Saturday, November 11th & Saturday, November 18th from 10:00am-3:00pm. *One additional training date will be offered for staff who are only available for Winter Camp: Saturday, December 16th from 9:00am-3:00pm.* This is a part-time position; hours are 2:30pm – 5:30pm, but flexibility is appreciated.
EDUCATION:
• High School diploma and pursuing a degree in an education or science related field; OR any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
• Some experience working with children in a formal or informal setting (teaching, babysitting, camp, tutoring, coaching, lessons, etc.)
• Comfort with delivering information to groups of children.
• Experience with behavior management and creative problem-solving.
• Ability to work collaboratively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, and physical abilities.
• Ability to work in a semi-structured environment with minimal supervision.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
• Current First Aid and CPR certification (training will be provided, if not already certified)
• Successful completion of a background check and fingerprinting.

Salary: $20.00/hour
Note: After-Care Assistants are expected to work all assigned days unless specific days off are approved by the Education & Engagement Manager prior to employment.
