Description

The Animal Curator position is responsible for the daily management of the animal collection and animal care staff. This responsibility includes but is not limited to diets, medication, animal training, breeding, records management and State and Federal permit submission. An employee in this class exercises direct supervision over a number of subordinate staff as well as volunteers. The Animal Curator works cooperatively with all contracted veterinarian staff.

Essential Functions:
• Supervises the care, handling, medical treatment and husbandry of zoo animals.
• Supervises subordinate staff engaged in all aspects of zoo animal husbandry.
• Conducts and participates in the public programs of the zoo such as daily keeper chats, exhibit enrichments, training demonstrations, etc.
• Creates policies and protocols for the animal department.
• Participates in exhibit design work for the zoo.
• Facilitates zoological research and participates in the development of the animal collection.
• Participates in zoo management by establishing animal management plans and institutional collection plans.
• Maintains accurate records pertinent to animal health, history, breeding, diet and, shall review daily animal reports to determine and authorize change in care, treatment, handling and/or feeding of animals.
• Continuously improves the enrichment and training program.
• Ensure all practices within the animal department are performed at the level of current AZA professional standards.
• Responsible for the obtainment and maintenance of all permits, licenses and other documentation required by the state and federal government.
• Assist in planning and preparation of the animal care budget and work within approved budget.

Education and Pre-requisites

Qualifications
• Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Zoology or a closely related discipline.
• 10 years’ experience in the care of captive wildlife in a zoological or wildlife park.
• 5 years’ supervisory experience, preferably in an AZA accredited organization.
• Advanced knowledge of the theory and practical application of biology, zoology and animal collection management.
• Strong management and communication skills and the ability to apply them in a zoological park environment.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well within a team environment.
• Strong computer skills.
• Ability to work fluctuating hours due to the needs of the organization.

Compensation and benefits
