The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”). The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it. The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (“AZA”). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.

SUMMARY: Assists with the management of the ambassador animal collection and associated programs, including supervision of large diverse groups of volunteers; day-to-day operations and all records associated with this operation; and ensures provision of the needs of the collection by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned & required.

ANIMAL AREAS
1. Coordinates or performs all aspects of day-to-day animal husbandry.
2. Prepare animal diets and determine feeding schedules.
3. Develops and maintains all animal records, including medical, behavior, feeding, and training.
4. Develops and coordinates animal training.
5. Performs or oversees medical treatments as required.
6. Creates animal enrichment.
7. Handles a diverse collection of amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and birds, including birds of prey.

PROGRAMS
1. Coordinates all ARC youth programs, functions and records, particularly the Nature Trail and Junior Zoologist programs.
2. Develop and present Wildlife Theatre shows and animal behaviors.
3. Implements and supervises the programs involving ARC staff and volunteers.
4. Trains interns and volunteers including associated record keeping.

FACILITIES
1. Makes minor and emergency repairs to equipment in the ARC.
2. Ensures the daily maintenance and operations of the facility
3. Ensures that safety practices and protocols are observed by interns and volunteers.
4. Assists with planning and the care of landscaped areas.

OTHER
1. Supervises special events presentations that utilize ARC resources.
2. Assists with reports and provides clerical support.
3. Interacts with Zoo visitors courteously and offers proper attention at all times.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum one year animal husbandry experience. Experience managing volunteers and supervising youth volunteers. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
