JOB OBJECTIVE:
To perform various duties required to maintain a clean and healthy environment for Penguins and other animals in the Zoo Education Outreach program as assigned at the Little Rock Zoo.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Observes Penguins and other animals in the Zoo Education Outreach program in assigned areas for injuries or symptoms of disease, and changes in behavior; reports changes and problems to supervisor; recommends changes to assist animals’ psychological and physiological well-being; implements approved changes. Prepares food and feeds Penguins and other assigned animals in the Zoo Education Outreach program according to established diets and assigned schedule;
researches, recommends and implements approved diet changes.Maintains detailed narratives and charts of animal observations, care, and handling; notifies supervisor and Veterinarian of animals requiring emergency attention. Captures and restrains animals for transport, examination or medical treatment. Administers prescribed medication to Penguins and other assigned animals in the Zoo Education Outreach program by mixing with food or by injection as required; assists veterinarian in administration of medication or treatment of animals. Completes daily worksheets listing amount of food eaten, medications administered, changes in animal behavior, symptoms of disease or other indications of needs for special attention, and any repair or maintenance required for enclosures. Unloads and stores shipments
of food; assures freshness and proper nutrition of food; notifies supervisor of food inventory as needed. Cleans penguin cages and other animal enclosures using water hose, high pressure steam, and hand tools. Transports animals or picks up supplies as required. Serves as backup to Animal Keepers in other assigned areas of the zoo. Monitors and reports water quality of the life support system. Coordinates and documents penguin and other Zoo Education outreach animal enrichment. Swims and dives in penguin exhibit to clean surfaces, rescue birds and related
activities; operates and maintains diving equipment. Presents daily feeding presentations to zoo visitors; participates in and presents both onsite and zoo outreach programs; utilizes microphone system and amphitheater sound system. Provides detailed factual information and training to Zoo Volunteers and docents regarding animals that are designated for education and programming activities. Provides special handling training for a variety of exotic animals used for education and programming activities by departmental staff and education volunteers at the
Little Rock Zoo; provides training to departmental staff and docents in the proper handling, presentation and transport of the education animal collection in a safe and professional manner. Operates a City automobile in the performance of essential job functions.

Education and Pre-requisites

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through completion of high school and two (2) years of experience in the care of penguins and other exotic animals utilized in zoo education programs, in a controlled environment. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: Must be available to work weekends and holidays.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS: A valid Arkansas Class D
NonCommercial Drivers License before employment and maintain licensure for
the duration of employment in this position.,A valid Open Water Dive Certification
through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) within one (1)
year of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment in
this position,A valid Standard First Aid and Community CPR certifications, or
other certifications which incorporate Standard First Aid and Infant, Child and
Adult CPR, within one (1) year of employment, and maintain certifications for the
duration of employment in this position.

Compensation and benefits

HIRING/ENTRY SALARY: $27,630 – $33,156 per year
