The Alexandria Zoo has been AZA accredited since 1986 and has a diverse collection of 500 animals, mostly consisting of unique mammals, birds and reptiles. We are a small team of dedicated individuals looking to add a self-motivated and enthusiastic team member!!
Kind of Work
The purpose of this classification is to promote conservation of wildlife and the mission of the City of Alexandria Zoo by developing educational programs, special events, and volunteer opportunities at the Zoo. Work is performed under the supervision of the Zoo Director.

Preferred applicant experience
• Knowledge of AZA protocols.
• Possess organizational, supervisory, team and communication skills.
• Experience in the zoo education field and ability to develop and conduct education programs like Summer Safari, homeschool classes, Scout badge workshops, outreach, etc following our mission statement.
• Experience managing/training adult and teen volunteers
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Volgistics and Excel.
• Ability to multi-task in a rapidly changing work environment effectively balancing and prioritizing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
• Preferred experience planning, coordinating, and executing events including birthday parties, venue rentals, fundraisers and our Lagniappe series.
• Experience with public relations involving our guests, the community and media including tv and radio appearances, social media, outreach speaking engagements, and education programming and interpretation.
• Participate in husbandry, handling and training of animal ambassadors and guiding teen and adult volunteers in their use for programs.
• Record, evaluate and report education department statistics.
• Be able to work in adverse weather conditions including heat, humidity and rain.

Work Schedule:
40 hours per week
Must have flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as needed

Education and Pre-requisites

Minimum Applicant Qualifications:
• Associate’s degree in Zoology or related field required, Bachelor’s degree in Zoology or related field preferred; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in educational programming in a zoo, wildlife reserve or similar facility, or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Will be required to obtain a valid Louisiana driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment.

Compensation and benefits

Salary:
$41,745.60 – $50,086.40
Benefits Offered:
21.87% employer retirement contribution; sick and vacation leave; health, dental, vision, and supplemental insurances offered.

Kind of Examination
This examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, a performance test or any combination thereof deemed necessary to adequately screen and rank applicants. Examination notices will be sent out via email with a testing date, time, and location. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their previous training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment. The information is subject to verification.
Must include copies of driver’s license, diploma, GED, DD214, degree, etc. with application.
