Responsible for the development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising plan for the Alabama Zoo Foundation. The Development and Marketing Director is responsible for identification, cultivation and stewardship of corporations, foundations, individuals as current and prospective donors. The Director will also ensure that the Zoo is well-represented within the various media outlets to help keep the Zoo at the forefront of tourist and local activities. The Development and Marketing Director will work with the Executive Director, volunteers and Board members to accomplish the following:
Major Responsibilities:
*Identify, cultivate, and solicit private major and annual gift donors to the Zoo in collaboration with the Board and Executive Director
*This role manages the donor relations program in support of fundraising objectives and projects and stewards the commitments made by donors. Steward private gift donors to the Zoo, including through thank-you letters, recognition opportunities, communications & printed materials, and stewardship & donor events, as appropriate.
*With assistance from the Board and the Executive Director, develops and implements a strategic donor relations plan that appropriately acknowledges and stewards all gifts and recognizes and engages donors, with a strong emphasis on major and principal gifts.
*Creates and oversees the execution of a gift acknowledgments program that uses best practices to thank donors in a manner appropriate to their gift, ensuring they are timely, meaningful and documented in the donor’s record.
*In collaboration with the Zoo Board and Executive Director, represent the Zoo on all issues regarding private fundraising, including working with the Business office to manage deposits of gifts, establish new funds as necessary, make changes to existing funds, assist with the expenditure of donated funds, assist in identifying focus areas for annual giving efforts, and all general fundraising issues for the Zoo.
*Responsible for planning, implementing and promoting a zoo-wide culture of gratitude through a comprehensive, strategic program based on the four pillars of donor relations: gift acknowledgment, gift stewardship, donor recognition and donor engagement.
*An important part of donor cultivation is exposure within the community. This position will also oversee the marketing of the Zoo, increasing our visibility within the community, the tourism market and within our region from Mobile to Pensacola.
*Create, provide and manage an effective marketing budget. This budget should allow the Zoo to have a presence in print media, billboards and, most importantly, social media.
*Provides direction to the donor relations staff based on goals and objectives established by the Zoo.
*Creates and implements a set of metrics to measure Donor Relations’ impact on organizational goals and use these metrics to create an annual Donor Relations business plan that advances the organization’s overall fiscal year goals.
*Oversees the creation and implementation of donor recognition areas, including named space plaques and signage, lifetime and campaign donor recognition electronic displays or walls, and serve as a key stakeholder and the donor’s voice on matters relating to capital projects, donor-named space renovations and relocations and signage.
*Designs, documents, and implements a systematic and integrated donor recognition program that encompasses recognition society events related to recognition and stewardship and naming dedications.
*Creates a zoo-wide inventory of donor recognition named spaces and suggested donations, with an emphasis on parity and consistency.
*Oversees fund reporting to donors, particularly endowed funds, as well as fund stewardship activities that ensure donor funds are spent appropriately and donors are kept well-informed about the use and impact of their gifts.
*Writes special-purpose donor correspondence and other highly customized donor communications, as needed.
*Works collaboratively with the communications team to recommend and advise on the recognition of donors in both print- and web-based publications, as well as impact reporting and extraordinary stewardship opportunities, as needed.
*Defines, creates, recommends, implements and interprets policies and procedures based on goals and objectives established by the Zoo as these relate to donor relations efforts ensuring the donor relations function is proactive and that donors view it as an accessible, knowledgeable and trusted resource.
*All other duties as assigned
This position is an important Senior level position within the Zoo. As such, this position works closely with the Executive Director to identify and cultivate donors to help ensure the financial stability of the Zoo and the Foundation.
Education and Pre-requisites
Successful candidates will possess a college degree in a related field, a proven track history of successful fundraising and donor development, and a strong desire to help a small organization grow.
