Fossil Rim is a 501(c)3, mission driven organization in Glen Rose, TX. The position of Curator of Hoofstock and Rhinos will work closely with the Director of Animal Care, the Avian Curator, Carnivore Curator, the Hoofstock Department and all other departments within the Fossil Rim organization to meet the mission.

Through these activities, we provide a diversity of compelling learning experiences that inspire positive change in the way people think, feel and act with nature.

The Primary Purpose of the Curator of Hoofstock and Rhinos Position:
• Oversight of the care and management of the hoofstock and rhino collection.
• Providing a healthy, well managed hoofstock collection on a daily basis.
• Supporting the conservation mission, with an awareness of wildlife and conservation issues.
• Enhancing the visitor experience and learning opportunities through the hoofstock/rhino collection.
• Providing professional training opportunities through staff and intern supervision.
• Providing supervision and oversight of the Animal Care staff in the hoofstock department.

Job Requirements Include:
• Providing daily animal care.
• Monitoring animal health in collaboration with the Animal Health department.
• Accurate record keeping—through both ZIMS and Microsoft office.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
• Animal area maintenance and upkeep in conjunction with the Support Services department.
• Time management to allow for daily animal care functions, as well as, office responsibilities.
• Position is considered “Essential/Mandatory Staff” and may be required to work on adverse weather days and during emergencies.
• Work includes indoor and outdoor work—including the ability to work in extreme temperatures of very cold (single digits F) and very hot (100+ F)
• Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds, stand, squat, and perform other duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Education and Pre-requisites

Candidate Requirements:
• Experience with hoofstock and rhino management (semi free range setting is preferable).
• Animal restraint.
• Record keeping and communication skills (including public speaking).
• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must be a team player, and able to self-motivate with a history of leadership skills and knowledge, including staff performance management, and willing to give and receive constructive feedback.
• Work independently and as part of diverse group, including with other departments at Fossil Rim.
• Have an applicable degree—zoology, biology, or related.
• Eight years minimum in this field, with five years in a supervisory role.

Additional Candidate Requirements:
• Considerable diverse knowledge of the natural history, ecology, behavior, anatomy, physiology, captive care and management of the species in the hoofstock and rhino collection.
• Experience networking with professional colleagues and communicate/collaborate with peers throughout the country to participate in and advance zoological management and welfare.
• Demonstrated experience conversing and presenting lectures on topics in areas of expertise to the public and professionally.
