Description
Join our fun team working with a wide variety of endangered species. West Texas Wildlife Preserve is located just 20 minutes outside Abilene, Texas. WTWP operates on 240 acres with over 55 different species of hoofstock, birds and mammals.
WTWP is seeking a mammal Curator. This position is responsible for performing a variety of duties related to animal husbandry and the maintenance of the enclosures for the bird department.
Mammal Curator responsibilities involve:
• Maintaining high standards of animal care through preparation and distribution of appropriate diets, animal observation, record maintenance and cleaning of animal areas and some public areas
• Actively supporting and implementing policies, procedures and protocols to ensure the highest standards of care of the collection and the safety of staff.
• Participating in collaborative efforts pertaining to the care of the collection including training, enrichment, research and education
• Willingness to be trained in all departmental areas, working with a large variety of animal species
• Maintaining a positive attitude, while communicating and collaborating with team members
Must have demonstrated discipline and have a history of a consistently high degree of work quality.
• A valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule which will include weekends and/or evenings and holidays.
• Ability to travel when necessary, usually not to exceed four weeks at one time.
• Ability to respond to emergencies on an on call basis.
• Must have good written and oral communication skills.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• In good health and capable of performing strenuous and/or heavy physical labor.
• No history of allergy related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to work.
• Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions.
Education and Pre-requisites
EDUCATION AND PRE-REQUISITES
Degree in Biology/Zoology or related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education/experience that provides the required knowledge and skills.
