Description

General Purpose:

Under the direction of Conservation Interpretation Management, this position assists in training and supporting an effective team of Conservation Interpreters who provide excellent experiences to Zoo guests. They also fulfil the duties and responsibilities of a Conservation Interpreter, providing an excellent guest experience, while also inspiring conservation action. This is a full-time position that starts at $18.66/hour.

Essential Functions:

Regularly fulfils the duties of a Conservation Interpreter, facilitating one-on-one learning with guests, leading interactive chats, and connecting zoo experiences to conservation actions.
Works with Conservation Interpretation Manager to design training for ongoing development for Conservation Interpretation staff.
Provides training, evaluation, feedback, and coaching of protocols in Conservation Interpreter program areas including presentations, guest enrichment activities, animal diet preparation, and on-exhibit experiences.
Provides training, evaluation and coaching in effective interpretation techniques to enhance guests’ experience and provide audience-driven information.
Stay up to date on animal collection information and relevant conservation issues.
May serve as a spokesperson to the community through contributions to select print media and public appearances as appropriate.
Engages in other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the Fresno Chaffee Zoo.
Assumes other responsibilities as necessary to assure achievement of established objectives.

Education and Pre-requisites

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:

Expertise in Environmental Education, Biology or related field (i.e. college-level coursework, field experience, classroom experience, professional experience, etc.)
Experience providing constructive feedback to groups and individuals, regularly identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
Familiarity with National Association for Interpretation (NAI) and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) guidelines for guest education and interpretation. Certification through the National Association of Interpretation is strongly preferred.
Strong verbal and written English communications skills required. Bilingual (Spanish or Hmong) communication skills a plus.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite is required.
Strong planning, analytical and decision-making skills are required, with the ability to work in a dynamic, evolving organization.
Demonstrates motivational and problem-solving acumen with a high degree of integrity and ethics.
Possesses the ability to articulate and inspire support for a vision of the future.

Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading.
Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication (in person and via telephone), at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must convey detailed or important spoken information to others in small and large group settings.
Hand and finger dexterity sufficient for typing and other administrative tasks.
The employee is regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment

This position regularly works with others including Zoo executives and employees, Zoo guests and community members, media and government officials.
The position primarily functions outdoors, with exposure to heat, cold, and inclement weather.
The employee is regularly exposed to a variety of animals with risk of animal bites, zoonotic disease, and other animal-related injury.
Occasional local travel and out-of-town travel required.

Compensation and benefits

This is a full-time position that starts at $18.66/hour.
