Job Title: Communications and Social Media Specialist

Department: Marketing/Public Relations

Reports to: Director of Communications

FLSA: Exempt

Status: Full-time

Job Purpose: To assist the Public Relations Team in promoting Zoo Atlanta’s mission; animal news; programs; conservation and education initiatives; business accomplishments; and events to the public and key stakeholders through social and digital media programs; social media monitoring and reporting; and traditional and non-traditional communications.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Serves as an integral part of Zoo Atlanta’s social media/digital content teams by facilitating day-to-day management and content development for at least two of Zoo Atlanta’s social media networks and other owned digital channels based on regular editorial content calendars. Engages with social media users on a regular basis by answering questions and responding to posts as needed.
• Responsible for regularly capturing content and collaborating with Zoo Atlanta’s animal care teams and other Zoo teams on content development.
• Responsible for developing and maintaining a program of social media engagement and reporting.
• Responsible for development and execution of an internal Zoo employee e-newsletter.
• Researches and identifies curated content for Zoo Atlanta’s digital properties; researches and applies trends and best practices in social media; researches trends in global wildlife conservation movements.
• Supports Zoo Atlanta communications objectives by providing written content, including but not limited to feature articles, blog posts and other written copy as assigned. Supports Zoo Atlanta communications objectives by proofreading written copy as assigned.
• Supports Zoo Atlanta’s public relations efforts by serving as media escort for on-site filming requests, interviews and television and motion picture filming as assigned. Assists Director of Communications in fulfilling media requests for assets as assigned.
• Assists with implementation and execution of Public Relations Team-related special events, projects, and presentations as assigned.
• Provides support for posting web-based content on zooatlanta.org.
• Develops and proactively maintains extensive working knowledge and continuing education of Zoo Atlanta’s animal population, programs, products, and offerings.
• Manages special projects as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Must be willing to support Zoo Atlanta’s Vision, Mission and Values statement.
• Weekend/holiday and some evening work required.

Education and Pre-requisites

Qualifications:

• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills required. Creative writing, creative captioning, and copywriting experience are highly desirable.
• Proven professional experience working with social and digital media required, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube.
• Working knowledge of social and digital media analytics are required.
• Video content production and editing skills are highly desirable.
• Proofreading skills required.
• Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, remaining deadline-and-detail oriented, required.
• Excellent customer service skills required.
• Ability to remain flexible and be comfortable working in an intense, quick-changing environment required.
• Must have high integrity and the ability to maintain high degree of confidentiality.
• Must be a team player and possess the ability to work collaboratively with others.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Digital Media, Journalism, Media Studies or related field with minimum of three years professional employment in one of these or related fields.

Requirements:

• Minimum three writing samples required upon application. Applications will not be considered in the absence of writing samples. Applicant must be willing to complete a proofreading test if considered for employment.
• Applicant-supplied examples of social media content or other digital content are desirable.
