Description
The Wild Animal Park is seeking an enthusiastic and progressive team member to join our animal care team as a full time Commissary Keeper.
Under the general supervision of the Animal Care Manager, the employee will serve as a Commissary Keeper at The Wild Animal Park. The Commissary Keeper is responsible for the daily preparation of diets for approximately 150 animals at the zoo. Employee is responsible for diet preparation, cleaning and sanitizing work areas and work materials, unloading supplies, assisting with food inventory and ordering. Must maintain effective communication with co-workers and supervisors, be able to multi-task and maintain a high level of consistently accurate kitchen skills including use of knives and be able to focus for extended periods.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for the accurate preparation of diets in accordance with individual diet specifications for all animals. May include counting, measuring, cutting or weighing items such as meat, fish, whole prey, produce, dry feeds, etc
Operate various types of equipment in the performance of duties such as grinders, blenders, food processors, scales, etc.
Drive a zoo vehicle for the purpose of retrieving and or delivering supplies and materials
Unload various supplies from trucks and vendors when needed
Organizes food storage area and daily diets to ensure accurate delivery of food items
Responsible for maintaining clean and sanitary conditions of food preparation areas including counters, floors, coolers, freezers, supply areas
Ensures highest level of food safety through quality control, proper rotation and storage, proper food handling, and appropriate use of chemicals and washing
Assist with commissary inventory and ordering
Maintain effective communication with co-workers and supervisors
Interact and communicate with co-workers, immediate supervisor, vendors, veterinarians and visitors as needed
May assist in the training of new commissary keepers or interns
Perform other duties as needed
Education and Pre-requisites
Skills:
Requires the ability to read, understand and follow a variety of diet instructions
Requires the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently using animal care and diet terminology
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to physically operate a variety of machines and equipment including grinders, food processors, automobiles etc. Must be able to carry, pull or move weights of up to 50 pounds on a consistent basis. Must be able to remain on feet for extended periods of time. Must be able to safely and efficiently use knives and other equipment used in diet preparation. May be exposed to cleaning chemicals and dust/airborne materials.
Other Requirements:
Must possess a valid driver’s license. Zoo and/or kitchen prep experience is desirable

Special Note:
Applicants may be required to work any combination of five days in the seven-day workweek including weekends and holidays.
Compensation and benefits
Depends on experience. PTO, sick time, personal time, and retirement after being employed for 1 year. Yearly incentives, bonuses, and performance based raises available.
