POSITION OVERVIEW
Save the Chimps operates the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in the world. Located on nearly 200 acres, the Sanctuary, located on the Treasure Coast of Florida, provides lifetime care and enrichment for chimpanzees rescued from research laboratories, entertainment, and the pet trade.

Save the Chimps was established in 1997 and is home to nearly 250 chimpanzees. The work of the organization is accomplished by a nonprofit board of directors, more than 75 full-time employed staff, and a number of community volunteers

The Husbandry Technician (HT) position is responsible for performing moderately skilled labor –intensive tasks in the care and well-being of the chimpanzees. This is a full-time, non-exempt position (40 hours per week). A HT is assigned to one of five sections within the sanctuary, and provides direct assistance to the Care Technicians in their section. A HT cleans indoor and outdoor areas of the chimpanzee buildings, fills chimpanzee areas with bedding and substrate, washes and hangs laundry, cleans enrichment, cleans food preparation areas, pressure washes, assists in minor building maintenance and checks locks.
A HT is responsible for assisting the Care Technicians in ensuring the security of all chimpanzee living areas. A HT is required to work according to the Philosophy of Care and protocols as outlined in the Save the Chimps Chimpanzee Care Manual.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Cleaning and maintaining all chimpanzee areas.
• Cleaning and maintaining food and enrichment preparation areas.
• Monitoring the safety of co-workers, chimps, and volunteers, and immediately alerting others to unsafe situations or conditions.
• Familiarity with Emergency Response codes and protocols
• Participation in team meetings, all-staff meetings, staff training and educational sessions, and emergency response drills.
• Other duties as assigned.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to: stand for long periods of time; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs, step stools, ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear; able to push and pull metal doors. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and team lift in excess of 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Must be able to run and swim in the face of danger.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks are regularly performed with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as toxic/poisonous agents, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, animals/wildlife.
