The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”). The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it. The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (“AZA”). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.

The goal of this internship is to learn and successfully perform (under supervision) the duties and responsibilities of a Zoo employee in the Children’s Zoo and Insect Zoo. Experience will include:

• Performs duties (under Supervision) essential to the daily operation of the Children’s Zoo contact yard area.
• Train the Talk on the Wild Side volunteers to deliver animal presentations.
• Schedule and coordinate Talk on the Wild Side volunteers to do the Children’s Zoo public presentations.
• Assist with creating and fabricating enrichment items for all contact yard animals and coordinate Talk on the Wild Side volunteers on how to deliver this enrichment.
• Perform/lead the Life on the Farm show as well as the daily duties as assigned.
• Assist staff and year-long interns with daily animal husbandry duties as assigned.
• Monitor guest, animal, and volunteer’s safety within the Children’s Zoo contact yard.
• Assist Zoo guests courteously within the contact yard.

Qualifications: All applicants must be at least 18 years of age by June 10, 2018. An interest in a career working with animals. Excellent public speaking skills and comfort in front of an audience is key for all applicants. Ability and desire to work with youth volunteers and people of all ages and backgrounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Environment: Most work will be outdoors, and therefor applicants must be able to tolerate extreme weather conditions. You must be able to tolerate working with dust, hay, and animal hair/dander. Tasks are occasionally strenuous and you must be able to handle routine physical labor and lifting up to 50 lbs. Applicant should be self-motivated and able to take initiative and follow directions.

SALARY: $14.00 per hour
