Description

This is mainly Predator Keeper Position (keeper will need to have a knowledge of equine, farmyard and hoof stock Husbandry also), is a full-time, year-round position that will assist in caring for over 175 animals the preserve is home to. This position will be trained in all areas of preserve animal care and husbandry with a strong emphasis on predator care and will work directly with many different kinds of animals through secondary and primary contact.

Performs routine food preparation and feeding functions in accordance with established diets and schedules; cleans and disinfects cages, houses, food and water containers, and related facilities and equipment; observes the movement and well-being of assigned collection; performs maintenance work such as enclosure maintenance, landscaping, raking and clearing of debris from walkways and viewing areas, emptying waste receptacles, setting up, modifying, building and dismantling animal exhibits and other maintenance repair work; assists in the care and medical treatment of injured and sick animals; assists in protecting preserve residents, facilities and equipment from mistreatment, vandalism and theft; assists in retrieving escaped animals and protecting the public in such instances; handles various wild creatures, including those of a delicate and/or hazardous species; public speaking and guided tours, keeps routine records and prepares simple reports; may operate various vehicles; must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs; performs other related functions as assigned.

Education and Pre-requisites

Requirements: Three years full-time, paid experience in the care of predators and big cats. Should be outgoing and personable with some experience working with the public. Internships/ College courses and/or degree in a field not accepted as experience. Please do not submit resume if you do not have 3 years paid experience. Knowledge of: animal behavior and care; feeding and handling (including manual restraint) of domestic and nondomestic varieties of animals; Building, maintenance, and repair of zoo facilities, grounds and equipment; elementary animal first aid; common varieties of wild and domestic animals found in zoo environments; record keeping. Ability to: perform routine zoo keeping and other maintenance work which may require manual work requiring physical strength, ability and stamina; withstand unpleasant working conditions associated with the care, feeding and handling of animals and the cleaning of living areas of animals; must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions including food preparation formulas, feeding schedules and medical treatments/prescriptions; understand and apply safety precautions pertaining to the feeding and handling of exotic animals and carnivores; deal tactfully and effectively with the general public, supervisors and co-workers; Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Special Minimum Requirement: Must possess and retain a valid Driver’s License as a condition of employment.

Compensation and benefits

Salary to be negotiated according to experience includes vacation and personal days. Housing package may come with the position, which includes electric, internet and water.
