Description
Fresno Chaffee Zoo is seeking to hire a knowledgeable, outgoing and customer-oriented Events Set up staff. This position is responsible for setting up all Zoo events, general repair of light structures and other projects. The successful candidate must be comfortable working with the public. This position must maintain enthusiastic interaction with customers while paying attention to details and always sticking to specifications. The Zoo employees’ positive interactions with customers create the unforgettable customer experience that keeps patrons coming back. Events Set Up staff also maintains and organizes events equipment and supplies.
Under the general direction of the Events Manager, this position delivers a fun, memorable birthday party experience through positive, energetic interaction with all party attendees. The position is responsible for birthday party set-up, clean up, serving party treats, oversees catering orders and service and addressing other issues as they arise to ensure a successful event.
Essential Functions:
Ensures that birthday party area is prepared and ready for guests’ arrival, presenting a clean, organized first impression.
Works closely with and follows instructions from Birthday Party Coordinator to ensure guest’s expectations are met.
Greets birthday child and family/guardians to gather special requests, answer questions and provide a personal welcome to the Zoo.
Interacts with all guests throughout the course of the birthday party to generate enthusiasm and facilitate smooth progression of party events.
Coordinates with in-house caterer or outside catering services/food vendors to set up food and beverage for party guests.
Distributes food, beverage, and desserts to party guests when requested.
Handles guest complaints and/or problematic requests in a professional, service-focused manner. Alerts management of serious concerns or uncooperative party guests.
Promptly communicates security or medical needs to appropriate personnel/departments.
Performs all clean-up tasks at the end of the party and ensures the party area is ready for the next event.
Assists in facilitating fundraisers and other events when requested.
Adheres to safety procedures in all aspects of work, including the use of Zoo equipment.
Uses good judgment and proper lifting techniques (team lift, etc.) while lifting or moving heavy items.
Maintains Zoo equipment to ensure safety, security, and proper operation.
Maintains order in storage areas and returns equipment to its proper place.
Performs other tasks and projects as assigned.
Education and Pre-requisites
Qualifications/Minimum Job Requirements:
Some related experience in customer service or special events preferred but not required.
Positive, enthusiastic attitude; genuine desire to provide exceptional service to Zoo guests.
Ability to work with a variety of personalities with professionalism and courtesy.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Access to reliable transportation.
Strong verbal English language communication skills required.
Valid California driver’s license and a clean driving record, preferred.
Ability to work on weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Ability to work overtime as needed.

This position requires the employee to stand and walk continuously throughout the shift. The employee is regularly required to bend, stoop, or crouch to set up event equipment.
The employee is regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
Visual acuity to read printed instructions and safety information.
Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication (in person and via telephone), at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
Work Environment
The position primarily functions outdoors, with exposure to heat, cold, and inclement weather.
The position may work in close proximity to Zoo animals.
Occasional local travel may be required.
