Description

The Bird Department of the Audubon Zoo is seeking qualified applicants for 2019 internship positions.

Internship Overview:
This opportunity is geared towards candidates that have an interest in a career in animal care or other conservation work. Bird Department interns work alongside the keepers in the daily husbandry of Audubon’s avian collection, gaining hands-on experience in basic care, diet preparation, observation skills, public speaking, record keeping, and enrichment. Interns will also have the opportunity to learn about basic avian conservation, biology, and ecology. Candidates are required to complete two independent projects throughout the internship. This is an unpaid internship and housing is not provided.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to perform manual labor in all environmental conditions (humidy, rain, heat, etc.)
Ability to bend, kneel, and squat
Ability to stand for an extended period of time
General Requirements:

Must be 18 years or older.
Current enrollment in, or graduation from, a college or university biology program (or related field).
Must be a self-motivated individual who can work individually and as part of a team.
Previous animal care experience and/or coursework in a related field is preferred.
Must be able to commit to a schedule. While there is some flexibility in this internship, we require that an intern commit to a minimum of 32 hours (4 days) per week for three months.
Must be able to effectively communicate with staff and zoo guests.
