Description

The Gulf Breeze Zoo, is seeking an enthusiastic animal keeper to join our team to work with a variety of avian species (see species list below). We are looking for a dedicated keeper with attention to detail and a passion for birds.

The applicant will be expected to have overall general bird knowledge with the ability to learn the natural history and behavior of the birds under their care. Working knowledge of incubation, breeding and rearing experience is preferred. This position includes care for both on and off exhibit avian species, established breeding birds in lifetime pairs, juvenile birds and a small collection of educational ambassador birds.

Species to be cared for include, but are not limited to: Hornbills, curassows, turacos, vultures, cranes, pheasants, kookaburras, toucans, owls, flamingos, waterfowl and parrots.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to: diligent daily care, behavioral enrichment, detailed record keeping, habitat maintenance, assisting with veterinary treatments, and interacting and educating guests about birds. Maintaining incubators, brooders, logs, and neonate care equipment in a team environment as needed, seasonally.

Education and Pre-requisites

This position requires a minimum of 2 years of experience working with exotics in a zoological setting. An Associates or Bachelor degree is preferred but may be substituted for equivalent experience. Preferred applicants will have 1-2 years of experience working with birds.
All applicants must be physically fit and active, able to lift 40 pounds comfortably and be able to work in all types of weather. Applicants must possess a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and a valid driver’s license. Must adhere to strict personal appearance requirements and maintain a non-smoking/vaping work environment. Must be dependable and willing to work flexible weekends and holidays as needed. Must be able to complete job tasks in a timely fashion, keep detailed daily records, and be proficient at observing animal behavior.
