Description

This position is under the direct supervision of the director of Emerald Forest Bird Gardens, Fallbrook, San Deigo, and is responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to animal husbandry of approximately 35 species of softbills including aracari, toucanets, toucans, macaws, cockatoos, and hornbills. This includes hand-rearing chicks during the breeding season and preparing birds for sale to customers including private collectors and zoological institutions.

Essential Duties:
The following duties are essential to this position. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
– Provides for husbandry needs of all animals in care by participating in daily cleaning, diet preparation, feeding, training, enrichment, and daily observations.
– Facilitate the breeding of aviary birds and participate in the hand-rearing of chicks.
– Responsible for daily observation of animal health and welfare. Reports abnormal behavior and problems to the area supervisor. Maintains accurate daily records of the animal collection.
– Cooperates and assists with veterinary treatments and instructions.
– Adheres to established animal handling, chick, breeding, and related safety protocols.
– Participate in capturing, immobilizing, and transporting animals
– Identifies and communicates regarding maintenance repairs needed for the safety of animals and staff as well as overall upkeep of the facilities.
– Functions effectively in both team and individual settings, and works toward adopting and creating best animal welfare practices.
– Clean and disinfect utensils, work tools, and containers
– Maintain plant life in and around enclosures
– Other duties as assigned.

– Must be able to maintain work hours that will serve the needs of Emerald Forest Bird Gardens. The applicant may be required to work any combination of five days in the seven-day workweek including holidays and varied after-hour events and feeding schedules as needed.
– The candidate will be expected to operate various equipment, including dicing machines
– Valid motor vehicle license
– Legally be allowed to work and live in the USA
– Ability to act calmly and professionally in all situations such as emergencies

Education and/or Experience
Essential:
Experience working with captive animals

Advantage:
Experience in an animal husbandry-related role.
Experience working with birds and hand-rearing various species is highly favored.

Knowledge of:
Care, feeding, and handling of exotic and/or domestic animals
Animal behavior
Safety practices around exotic and domestic animals

Compensation and benefits

Housing and utilities can be provided to certain candidates that have prior experiene in hand-rearing birds and would like to oportunity to live on-site and work overtime and evening shifts.
