Description
West Texas Wildlife Preserve is a 240 acre ranch-style preserve located in Merkel, TX focused on working with zoological facilities to provide conservation of and genetic diversity to over 55 different species. WTWP is a new and growing facility with a strong vision for the future, led by a highly experienced management team. We are seeking a passionate, dedicated, long-term Bird Curator to join our team! Bird Curator responsibilities include:
Maintaining high standards of animal care through preparation and distribution of appropriate diets, animal observation, record maintenance and cleaning of animal areas and some common areas.
Actively supporting and implementing policies, procedures and protocols to ensure the highest standards of care of the collection and the safety of staff.
Participating in collaborative efforts pertaining to the care of the collection including training, enrichment, research and education.
Willingness to be trained in all departmental areas, working with a large variety of animal species.
Maintaining a positive attitude, while communicating and collaborating with team members.
Must have demonstrated discipline and have a history of a consistently high degree of work quality.
A valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
Ability to work a flexible schedule which will include weekends and/or evenings and holidays and on-call need.
Must have good written and oral communication skills.
Some knowledge of horticulture is preferred in order to keep plants alive in habitats
Preference will be given to applicants with a proven record of successful avian breeding
Works with the Director and General Curator to design species-specific exhibits focused on reproductive needs
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
In good health and capable of performing strenuous and/or heavy physical labor.
Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
Ability to work in all weather conditions.
Education and Pre-requisites
● High School Diploma or GED
● Degree in Biology/Zoology or related field is preferred, or an equivalent combination of
education/experience that provides the required knowledge and skills.
Compensation and benefits
Salary commensurate with experience.
Schedule will include alternating weekends off.
5 days PTO upon completion of 6-months, 10 days PTO after 9 months
