Description
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, a not-for-profit, AZA accredited organization; the avian internship focus is on the breeding season of the highly endangered Attwater’s Prairie Chicken. Fossil Rim Wildlife Center offers its Avian Internship from April to August (dates are flexible). This breeding program is paramount in the reintroduction and recovery of this species of grouse. Interns take part in the daily feeding, cleaning, diet preparation, visual observations, recording embryonic and chick development, daily assessments and treatments with the veterinary staff. Healthy chicks are then slotted for future breeding, or for the annual U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service release program.
Resumes are accepted year-round for this position but interviewing is conducted between December and January. Applicants must be available from early April through July – August. This internship is only available during the spring semester. Candidates should have an interest in and dedication to wildlife conservation. Strong communication and organizational skills are necessary as well as attention to fine details. Being able to work independently but in a team atmosphere is also required. Similar to the other internships at Fossil Rim, on-site housing and transportation are provided.
Education and Pre-requisites
At least two years of college in wildlife management, conservation biology or related science is preferred. Interns will be required to work weekends, holidays and in inclement weather including 100º temperatures. Onsite housing and stipend are available. Resumes will be accepted through January 30, 2017 for the upcoming Spring season.
