Zoo Atlanta is inviting qualified candidates to apply for an Associate Veterinarian position. This is one of three positions which directs and oversees the veterinary medical requirements and programs for our entire animal collection. The veterinary department is staffed with three full time licensed technicians and a full time Hospital Keeper/Administrative Coordinator. Zoo Atlanta offers a very active, exciting and progressive work environment. Our 40 acre facility, with a diverse collection of over 1,200 animals representing 240+ animal species, is one of Atlanta’s most visited attractions. The sought after candidate must possess the ability to successfully manage and implement a complete veterinary medicine program. Primary departmental responsibilities include, but are not limited to: perform clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical procedures, review and implement preventative care programs, develop and supervise veterinary staff, oversight and training of a veterinary resident, as well as veterinary and veterinary technician students. This position will partner with the veterinary staff and animal management team to develop and set husbandry and animal health standards for all of Zoo Atlanta’s animal collection. Other duties include maintenance of animal medical records, participation in emergency procedure reviews and standard operating procedures for the veterinary department. Minimum qualifications include a DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college plus a minimum of 4 years of practical experience in veterinary medicine, preferably in zoo and/or exotic animal medicine. ACZM certification or eligibility to sit for the exam is desired as the qualified candidate will help supervise a veterinary resident, who rotates through a joint ACZM residency program between the University of Georgia, the Georgia Aquarium, and Zoo Atlanta. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with other departments and contribute to a solution oriented management style is strongly desired.
