SUMMARY: This is a position for creative, enthusiastic, hardworking individuals with a strong interest in environmental education and working with children. You will learn and successfully perform (under supervision) the duties and responsibilities of Zoo Camp instruction while inspiring wonder, knowledge and action. Successful applicants will be dependable, flexible, have a sense of humor, and a love for nature.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

1. Assists Zoo Camp Instructors to conduct Zoo Camp classes.
2. Assists with the supervision of the children who are enrolled in the classes.
3. Under the direction of the Zoo Camp Instructor, prepares and organizes materials needed for classes.
4. Assists with the implementation and teaching of lesson plans and activities.
5. Supervises and evaluates teen volunteers.
6. Ensures the safety of campers, staff and guests at all times.
7. Occasionally runs early care program in which over-time hours will be expected.
8. Interacts with Zoo guests courteously and offers proper attention at all times.
9. Maintains a clean and organized Zoo Camp environment.
10. Works effectively as a member of a team.
11. Support both the mission of the Zoo and the related mission of the Education Department by performing other duties as assigned by Zoo Camp management, and/or the Director of Education.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. • Ability to work full-time, Monday through Friday, for the entire camp season between the end of May to the end of August.
EDUCATION:
• College level coursework in biology, zoology, environmental studies, and/or education preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
• Some experience working with children (formal or informal teaching, babysitting, camps, tutoring, coaching, lessons, etc.).
• Ability to present information to groups.
• Successful completion of a background check and fingerprinting.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• The San Francisco Zoo encourages bilingual candidates to apply.
• First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
• Experience with children, particularly those with special needs a plus.
• Experience working with and giving guidance to teens preferred.
• Ability to work well collaboratively and manage time efficiently.

Salary: $13.00/hour
Note: Assistant Instructors are expected to work all assigned weeks unless specific days off are approved by the Zoo Camp director prior to employment.

Summer Zoo Camp will run Monday through Friday from June 5 through August 18, 2017. Training will take place the week of May 29th.
