Description

Do you dream of working with large herds of African Antelope and Zebra as well as a small herd of male Rothschild’s Giraffe in a remote beautiful area in Northern California? Then this may be your dream job.

This position is for a part time assistant keeper at B Bryan Preserve, an AZA Certified Related Facility located on 110 acres in Point Arena, CA. The ideal candidate will gain valuable experience working alongside keepers with a variety of exotic and endangered hoof stock including the 3 species of Zebra, Sable, Roan and Greater Kudu Antelope and a herd of male Rothschild’s Giraffe. Work ranges from physical tasks associated with feeding and maintenance of the animal’s living areas to more analytical tasks of record keeping and communication. Keeper is also expected to help out with 1.5 hours visitor tours daily as needed.

Daily husbandry duties include:

*Cleans and maintains enclosures; removes animal excrement and food remnants.
*Prepares food for animals; regulates and distributes food once prepared; loads and unloads foodstuffs; leaves grounds to go cut browse.
*Observes behavior of animals on both a day-to-day and long-term basis; notes any unusual behavior, signs of illness or injury, change in appetite, start of breeding cycle, or lack of compatibility with group members and reports information.
*Assist Keepers as needed for training
*Assist/observe veterinary procedures when required
*Completes keeper notes daily
*Conduct 1.5 hour visitor tours twice a day as needed

Education and Pre-requisites

*Minimum 1 year experience in the care of captive hoof stock in the zoo field.
*Capable of accurately following written and verbal directions, policies and protocols.
*Ability to work alone as well as part of a team.
*Comfortable working outdoors in physically demanding and adverse conditions
*Good physical condition; able to lift 50 lbs. and move a minimum of 120 lbs.
*Valid drivers license and clean driving record
*Up-to-date tetanus vaccination.
*Good written and verbal communications skills
*Knowledge of the habits and hazards of working with wild animals; willingness to work with some physical risk while observing proper safety precautions

Compensation and benefits

$15/hour – 32 hour week. Short term temporary housing may be available while looking for housing.
