Description
The Oregon Zoo is hiring an Aquatic Life Support Maintenance Worker. This position performs preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, problem solving, water quality testing and monitoring, construction of new aquatics systems and operations/functions involving mechanical, plumbing and piping, and troubleshooting electrical as required to maintain Zoo operations. The focus of this position is aquatic life support.
It’s an exciting time at the zoo! The passage of a voter supported bond measure is allowing us to design and build new exhibits for elephants, primates, polar bears, rhinos and a new conservation education facility. The new master plan includes a strong focus on water and energy conservation, dynamic animal collection opportunities and improved sustainability of all zoo operations. The zoo is moving toward automating life support systems and collecting and tracking water quality information digitally.
The Life Support Team (LSS) is looking for new ways to conserve water and electricity by upgrading equipment and changing operational practices. The LSS team is responsible for the operation a number of fresh and salt water systems that support marine mammals, elephants, cats, beaver/otters and a collection of fish and invertebrates. The position will work closely with the
Living Collections team to offer the highest level of care to our animals.
Education and Pre-requisites
Three or more years of experience with life support systems operations and maintenance or equivalent experience in water/wastewater treatment or pool/spa operations and maintenance; experience must include service, repair and installation. Possession of, or the ability to obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must complete online OSHA Confined Space Entry – Permit Required & Non-permit certification course within 6 months of hire
Compensation and benefits
Pay rate is $26.29 – $33.43/hour. Benefits include participation in the State of Oregon’s pension fund PERS. Excellent health benefits and more.
