Position Summary:
The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum has added stingrays to its expanding collection and is seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our team of keepers in the department of Herpetology, Ichthyology and Invertebrate Zoology. The successful candidate will have strong knowledge and experience in aquatic systems; saltwater and freshwater (80% of the position). Basic knowledge and husbandry specific to herpetology and invertebrate zoology are highly desirable (20% of the position). Must be comfortable with presenting lectures to the public. Knowledge of the Sonoran Desert region is beneficial. The successful candidate is expected to continue to seek and acquire education/knowledge in several fields. Must be able to work weekends and holidays as required. Must be a quick learner and a self-starter, requiring little supervision. Must be team oriented and have a demonstrated history of being courteous, sensitive and respectful.

Education and Pre-requisites

Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school and at least two years’ work experience (preferably paid) in an AZA-accredited facility; or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.

Compensation and benefits

This is a Regular status, benefits eligible position averaging 24 hours per week.

Initial Step: $15.16/hour for the first year. This is a bargaining unit position.

Located in Tucson Mountain Park, just outside of Saguaro National Park (West), the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a world-renowned zoo, natural history museum and botanical garden. Exhibits recreate the natural landscape of the Sonoran Desert Region. Within the Museum grounds there are more than 300 animal species and 1,200 kinds of plants. There are almost 2 miles of paths traversing 21 acres of beautiful desert. The Desert Museum is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is a member of the American Public Gardens Association and the American Association of Museums.
