The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is recruiting for a permanent full time Animal Relocation Specialist as part of our Animal Care, Health & Welfare branch. As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for the oversight of the logistical planning, coordination, and execution of all domestic and international animal and specific biosample shipments for the Wilder Institute / Calgary Zoo.

What you will do:

-Responsible for logistics and compliance related to animal transactions as well as animal and specific biosample transport from inception to completion, including but not limited to stakeholder communication, preparation of animal transaction documents, animal transport materials, health certificates, permits, etc.
-Coordinates and executes animal transport plans with all stakeholders including within the branch, other branches, other organizations, relevant government agencies and logistics providers; ensuring legal, safe, and humane transport of animals as approved by the Director of Animal Care, Health & Welfare
-Prepares documentation for domestic and international animal shipments; coordinated with managers, animal care professionals, shippers, vendors, receiving institutions, and other agencies on transaction and shipment preparation and labeling
-Keeps current on related legislation and standards, Canadian and international, and advises on requirements pertaining to exotic wildlife and transportation rules and regulations
-Assists the appropriate Animal Care, Health and Welfare staff with placement of seized shipments (Environment Canada, Canadian Wildlife Services, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES))
-Procures and maintains required federal, provincial, and local permits necessary for the maintenance and transport of wildlife in accordance with regulations
-Understands, develops, and maintains appropriate communication with internal and external stakeholders required for successful animal transactions
-Assists other zoos and institutions with animal movement inquiries and information, both nationally and internationally
-Creates and maintains protocols and process documentation related to animal transport
-Responsible for animal crate inventory including entering requests for new crates, movement of large shipment equipment, shipping container repairs, and other maintenance

Department-Specific Responsibilities:
-Contributor to Animal Population Planning
-Trained for cross-functional support in Species360 Projects and high-volume records support
-Participate in Zoological Registrar Association; monitor emerging trends and innovations within the field
-May be required to work after hours or on weekends dependent on shipment schedule
-Monitor appropriate internal systems and processes for department operation
-Look for opportunities and make recommendations to improve and streamline procedures, processes and documentation related to Zoological Records & Animal Relocation department function
-Other duties as assigned

-Working in an open office environment
-Periods of high stress associated with dynamic animal shipments
-May be required to work after hours or on weekends dependent on shipment schedule

Education and Pre-requisites

Knowledge of federal, provincial, and international laws and regulations applicable to animal acquisition, disposition, exhibition, registration, and transportation domestically and internationally
Knowledge of International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Requirements is considered an asset
Zoo registrar experience is considered a strong asset
Animal transport logistics experience is considered a strong asset
Zoological nomenclature and medical terminology knowledge is considered an asset
Experience using Species360 (Zoological Information Management Software) or other zoo software is considered an asset
Degree or certification in relevant field is preferred
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
Strong computer skills required (Microsoft 365)
Excellent organization and concise communication skills
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the general public
