Description

The animal keeper is responsible for the physical health and psychological well-being of the animals directly under his/her care. Work ranges from the physical tasks associated with feeding and maintenance of living areas to more analytical tasks. The animal keeper is expected to develop a comprehensive knowledge of the natural history of the species under their care. S/he must possess sound judgement in the care of wild animals, work cooperatively and communicate well with co-workers, volunteers, and supervisors, and demonstrate good public relations skills with zoo guests. This is an independent position; reliable and consistent attendance is critical to the function of the Animal Care Department. The Float Keeper is expected to work with Primary and Relief Keepers and takes direction from the Supervising Primary Keeper and the Zoological Manager regarding daily operations, as appropriate. S/he is expected to implement Department/Zoo priorities as appropriate. S/he is expected to guide and support junior staff and volunteers as appropriate. The animals to be cared for in this position are Lion, Tiger, Camel and Birds. This is a temporary position and will last approximately 1 Year beginning as soon as applicant is available.

Job Requirements
1. Minimum of 6 months (1040 hrs.) paid full time experience in the care of captive wildlife in the zoo field.
2. Good physical condition; able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. (i.e. feed sack) and move a minimum of 120lbs.(i.e. hay bale)
3. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
4. Willingness to work outside normal business hours including weekends and holidays.
5. Good written and verbal communications skills
6. Knowledge of the habits and hazards of working with potentially dangerous wild animals; willingness to work with some physical risk while observing proper safety precautions

Education and Pre-requisites

1. Bachelor’s degree in zoology, biology or a related field.
2. Some working knowledge in behavioral training theory and practical application
3. Experience with large carnivores preferred.

Compensation and benefits

Salary: $22.00 per hour
