Description

The Museum of Life and Science is a regional, not-for-profit science center located on an over 80-acre site in Durham, North Carolina. Exhibits housing approximately 100 animals, including large and small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates are located both inside and outdoors.
The Animal Keeper Specialist is responsible for providing healthy, active, safe, and clean environments for the animals as well as interacting with the public about animals and animal care. Work will be in all areas of the department, including the Farmyard, Explore the Wild, and Carolina Wildlife exhibits, along with the education animals and animal support spaces. General duties include animal observation; feeding animals; cleaning cages, exhibits and support spaces; general maintenance; record keeping; animal enrichment; operant conditioning; assistance with veterinary care; and daily guest interaction and programs.

Education and Pre-requisites

Successful candidates must be able to work as part of a team, supporting and collaborating with teammates. Candidates must be adaptable, as well as work well under pressure with a positive attitude and creative problem solving skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required. Candidates must be available for regular weekend work; be physically fit including the ability to repeatedly lift 50 pounds, stand for over six hours at a time; and work in wide ranging temperatures and weather conditions. Animal Care experience at similar institution is desirable.
