Description
JOB OBJECTIVE:
To prepare fruits, vegetables, dry goods and frozen, raw and processed meats for consumption by zoo animals according to diet sheets as prescribed by the animal management team for zoo animals at the Little Rock Zoo.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Prepares fruits, vegetables, dry goods and frozen, raw and processed meats for regular and special diets for consumption by zoo animals by washing, cutting and combining them according to diet sheets prescribed by the animal management team; follows appropriate thawing guidelines for meat and whole prey items; measures, cuts, weighs and counts items to obtain correct amounts of all individual diet items and supplements based on animal needs. Maintains
sanitary food preparation areas by cleaning and sanitizing kitchen daily after diets are completed including countertops, floors and equipment; washes and stores dishes and tools;cleans, mops and sweeps walk-in cooler, walk-in freezer and dry food storage area as needed. Orders produce and maintains adequate inventory to prepare diets; verifies orders upon delivery to ensure quantity and quality of items delivered; compares contents to invoices,ensuring appropriate amount delivered; documents discrepancies on appropriate forms; forwards invoice to Zoo Administration and Curators. Receives and inspects meats, fruits, vegetables, and other perishable foods for freshness; properly stores stock in cooler and freezer; practices proper food rotation and monitors storage areas for proper temperatures; discards spoiled and outdated/expired foods. Conducts walk through of the Zoo to ensure all patrons have exited Zoo grounds; secures front gate of the Zoo at assigned times; checks all other perimeter locks; monitors Zoo grounds for pest animals. Conducts a walk through of the Zoo buildings and animal enclosures to ensure animals are secure and buildings are locked; observes animals for injuries and symptoms of diseases and changes in behavior; advises appropriate personnel if animals appear to be ill, injured, unsecure or any other hazardous conditions. Completes log sheet to note changes in animal behavior, unusual observations or other areas that require special attention; notifies night security of any safety issues and prior to leaving at end of shift; contacts Police Department to advise of break-ins as required. Provides assistance during special events at the Zoo. Operates a forklift to transport dumpsters to appropriate area for collection and to store and move dry food as needed. Operates a Cityvehicle in the performance of essential job functions.
Education and Pre-requisites
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through completion of high school and two (2) years of experience in the care of exotic animals in a zoological setting and one (1) year of zoological commissary experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS: Class D
Non-Commercial Drivers License before employment.
Compensation and benefits
HIRING/ENTRY SALARY: $27,630 – $33,156
