Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Animal Keeper is responsible for the care and maintenance of the animals and their environments, ensuring healthy animals and a viable habitat, making small and large animals available to our customers through park walks, Animal Corral and “Dr. Doolittle” sessions with field trip groups. Help integrate the animals and information about them into overall programming.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
•Basic care
Clean pens, cages and night houses once daily or more if needed. Rake and clear pens of larger animals of manure at the end of the day. Make minor repairs to structures or make a written request to Maintenance for larger repairs. Maintain the exterior and interior of all animal exhibits, ensuring cleanliness and a quality appearance.
Adhere to medical treatment, advice and recommendations of Veterinarian and Vet Tech in the care of the animals.
Feed each animal a prescribed diet according to guidelines.
Groom animals on a regular basis.
Exercise large animals and walk them through the park to interact with patrons. Play with and provide toys and activities that help animals enjoy their days.
•Recordkeeping
Maintain accurate daily records and charts on each animal.
•Health maintenance and preventive care
Implement recommendations after USDA visits. Follow procedures outlined by the Consulting Licensed Vet Tech or Attending Vet.
•Overall Park Cleanliness
Police the area to ensure that all manure and animal wastes are removed after animals have been in the Teddy Bear Picnic Area or after escorted walks through the park.
•Educational Programs – Dr. Doolittle
Develop and implement programs geared toward educating children about animals, their care and their habitats. Such programs should include: Animal Corral, informational signs on pens or cage.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
• High School diploma, or GED preferred.
• Experience working with large animals as well as small animals.
• Some Vet Tech training or education preferred.
• Must like animals and be willing to clean pens and night houses.
Physical Requirements
Requires standing, sitting, kneeling, walking, repetitive motions, ability to lift 50 lbs safely, hearing, visual acuity, and good communication skills.
Work Schedule
7:30am – 4:00pm
16 hrs a week during Fairyland “off” schedule (24-32 hrs during the Summer)
Must be available to work weekends and holidays.
Grooming & Uniform
All employees must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance, must wear a belt at all times and appropriate shoes. CFL provides (2) uniform shirts that must be worn at all times while on duty.
A wrist watch is preferred, strict cell phone policy.
